Main
Street Radiology installed the first PET scanner
in Queens on October 21, 2002. PET has been established as an
excellent non-invasive whole-body imaging procedure that measures
change in metabolic activity which can be quantified and imaged.
Numerous indications have been well documented in the medical
literature to better diagnose many cancers, as well as cardiac and
neurological abnormalities.
Indications;
Center for Medicare and Medicaid
Services (CMS) has announced reimbursement for the following
indications:
|
Oncology
(diagnosis, staging, and restaging)
|
 |
Cardiology
- myocardial viability
Neurology
Most insurance programs also reimburse
PET scanning for their patients.
Patient Preparation
- Do not eat for four hours prior to
the exam
- You may drink water (no coffee,
juice, soda, etc.)
- No exercise for 24 hours before the
exam. Try not to walk a long distance to our office; our office
can arrange transportation for the patient if this is not
possible.
- Bring copies of previous PET and CT
scans if they were not performed at Main Street Radiology
- If you are a diabetic, schedule for
the first appointment of the day (7:30 a.m.). Nothing to eat after
midnight. No insulin or diabetes pills on the morning of the exam.
Scanning Procedure:
- A small amount of blood is obtained
from the patient's finger to determine the sugar (glucose) level, as
this may affect the quality of the study
- A small amount of radioactive
material (FDG) is injected into the patient's vein. The amount of
radiation to the patient is less than a typical CT scan
- The patient must wait for
approximately 1 hour for the body to absorb the injected compound
- The patient then lies on a table,
much like a CT scan, where images of the body are obtained. This
may take up to 45 minutes
- The patient may resume normal
activity immediately following the PET scan
- The total procedure takes
approximately 2 hours
