The 2003 Nobel Prize for medicine
was awarded to two scientists who played a key role in the
development of the MRI scan. Since it's introduction in 1970's,
MRI has changed the practice of medicine.
At Main Street Radiology,
the MRI division is composed of three sections: neuroradiology,
musculoskeletal radiology, and body imaging.
There are three board-certified,
fellowship trained neuroradiologists at MSR. Their
specialty encompasses diseases of the
brain, spine, head, and
neck. MRI exams are performed to evaluate common problems such as
headaches and back pains. MRA (magnetic resonance angiography) is
also routinely performed to evaluate the blood vessels of the neck
and brain.
At MSR we also have
sophisticated software usually found only at major academic
hospitals, to perform specialized studies such as MR spectroscopy
and perfusion/diffusion imaging, to better evaluate disease
processes such as brain tumors and strokes.
Musculoskeletal MRI section at MSR
is headed by Dr. Anthony
Italiano. He is one of handful of fellowship-trained
musculoskeletal radiologists in New York City. MRI is used to
evaluate the joints, bones, and muscles of the extremities. Our
radiologists routinely study patients with sports injuries,
arthritis, tumors, and many other disease processes. With our
high-field (1.5T) MRI and specialized coils, we can obtain
high-resolution images of small parts, such as the wrists and
feet, superior to low-field and open MRI units.
There are four fellowship-trained
body imagers at MSR. Body MRI section performs exams of
the chest, abdomen, pelvis, breasts, and cardiovascular system.
With our advanced hardware and software, we perform studies not
performed by most radiology facilities, including MRCP
(magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography), breast
MRI, MRA of lower extremities, and MR
urography.
