Breast
MRI (arrow indicates cancer) |
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the
breasts has been shown as a highly sensitive test for breast cancer,
detecting significantly more cancers than mammograms, ultrasound or
physical exam. It is most useful when the patient has high risk for
breast cancer or when the routine mammogram is indeterminate.
When is breast MRI
appropriate?
- To evaluate high-risk patients,
including women with hereditary predisposition to cancer
- To evaluate patients with recognized
genetic mutations (BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes)
- To better characterize atypical or
indeterminate findings on mammogram
- To evaluate lesions with discrepant
mammogram and sonogram findings
- To evaluate patients with
dense-breasts
- Prior to breast cancer surgery, to
better evaluate extent and location of lesions
- To evaluate patients following
breast surgery
- To evaluate breast implants
High quality breast MRI can only be
performed on a high-field magnet with specialized hardware and
software. At Main Street Radiology, we have the latest
equipment to perform optimal examinations. In addition, we are one of
few centers in the New York area with the ability to study both
breasts at the same time. We also have the capability of needle
localization and biopsy under MR guidance. The breast MRI program at
MSR is headed by Dr. Maura
Noordhoorn, who is
fellowship-trained in Body MRI.
Medicare and most insurance plans cover
Breast MRI.
